The Dinan Valved Axle-Back Exhaust with black tips gives the BMW G42 M240i a proper quad-tip exhaust with two valves instead of one. Tubing steps up from 70mm stock to 76mm, both valves are 76mm and 30% less restrictive than the originals, and all four 102mm tips finish in black ceramic coating. It bolts on behind the factory mid-pipe and keeps the car's computer-controlled valve logic.
Why the Dinan Valved Axle-Back Exhaust Sounds Right Every Day
The factory setup runs one valve and routes all exhaust to the driver side when it is closed. Dinan adds a second valve and actuator so both sides flow evenly. With the valves closed, gas runs through the muffler and exits the two inner tips, so a highway run or a cold start in the neighborhood stays civil and conversation carries on without drone. Under load both valves open, the muffler is bypassed, and the outer tips come alive. You get a louder car when you ask for it and a quiet one when you do not.
Construction is brushed T304 stainless steel, TIG welded, with laser-engraved clamp-on tips. It is 4 pounds lighter than the stock axle-back, and Dinan measured up to 6 HP and 5 lb-ft at 6600 RPM.
Dinan Axle-Back Exhaust Legal Status and Fitment Confidence
An exhaust behind the catalytic converters does not change what comes out of the engine. Dinan rates this system Emissions Code 5: it does not affect vehicle emissions and is legal for sale or use on emissions-controlled vehicles. Installation Notes
Dinan rates the install at about 2.5 hours. It uses the factory mounting points and needs no cutting. A lift makes it much easier, so most owners have a shop handle it. The factory valve actuator is reused, and the second valve actuator is supplied.
- Let the exhaust cool completely and raise the car safely on a lift.
- Disconnect the factory valve actuator and remove the rear exhaust section from the hangers.
- Transfer the factory actuator and fit the supplied second valve actuator as shown in the Dinan instructions.
- Hang the Dinan axle-back on the factory mounts, align the sections and tighten the clamps.
- Install the black ceramic tips, set the tip position in the bumper cutouts, then start the car and check for leaks and valve operation.
