Turn into a fast corner in a G80 M3 and there is a tiny pause between your hands and the front tires. That pause lives in the rubber bushings of the front tension struts. They soak up vibration on the commute, and they also flex every time you load the front end. Older M cars did not have that layer of rubber in the way. You can take it back out.

The Dinan Tension Strut Ball Joint Kit for the BMW G87 M2, G80 M3 and G82/G83 M4 replaces the factory rubber bushings in the front thrust arms with precision ball joints in machined aluminum housings. This is the monoball upgrade in modern terms: the arm pivots on a bearing instead of squirming in rubber, so what you do at the wheel reaches the tires without the delay.

Why a Tension Strut Ball Joint Kit Sharpens Your M Car

Under braking and hard cornering, the stock rubber bushing deflects and lets the tension strut move. Dinan's ball joint kit removes that deflection. The result is improved steering responsiveness and reduced brake shimmy, which you feel most on a back road or at the track when you trail brake into a turn.

Worried about noise and harshness on the street? Dinan uses sealed, nylon-lined bearings for quiet operation, so the kit is built for a car you still drive every day. It works on both rear-wheel-drive and xDrive cars. Suspension bushings do not affect emissions, and Dinan classifies this part as legal for use on emissions-controlled vehicles.

Tension Strut Ball Joint Kit Install and Ownership

This is not a ten-minute job. Dinan lists 4.0 hours of labor because the front tension struts come off the car and the factory bushings are replaced with the ball joint assemblies. If you are comfortable with a press and a torque wrench, it is a solid garage weekend. Otherwise any shop that works on G8X M cars can handle it. Dinan part number D280-0030. Sold by AutoTecknic, an authorized Dinan dealer.

Installation Notes

Dinan lists 4.0 hours of labor. Professional installation is recommended if you do not have access to a bushing press. Follow the Dinan instructions included with the kit and torque all suspension fasteners with the car at ride height.

  1. Safely raise and support the car and remove the front wheels.
  2. Unbolt and remove the front tension struts.
  3. Press out the factory rubber bushings and press in the Dinan ball joint assemblies.
  4. Reinstall the tension struts and torque the fasteners to factory spec with the suspension loaded.
  5. Have a four-wheel alignment checked, then road test for noise and steering feel.
