A BMW twin-turbo V8 asks a lot of its ignition. Eight cylinders, two turbos and high cylinder pressure every time you lean on it. When a factory coil starts to fade, you feel it as a stumble at part throttle, a misfire code, or a flat spot right when the boost comes in.

The Dinan Red Ignition Coil is a direct plug-and-play replacement for the factory N2 series coil on BMW N63TU3, S63TU4 and S68 V8 engines. Dinan rates it at up to 10% more energy output than stock for a stronger, more consistent spark, and finishes it in a bold red housing that shows the upgrade the moment the engine cover comes off.

Why Upgrade to a Dinan Ignition Coil

Coils are a wear item on any turbo V8, so most owners replace them sooner or later. If you are replacing them anyway, the Dinan coil gives you up to 10% more energy output than stock in the same location, with the same connector and the same mounting points. It follows the factory N2 series pattern, cross-referenced to BMW part 12138692611, so there is no wiring, no adapters and no guesswork at install.

Check Your Engine Before You Order

Not every S63TU4 car uses this coil. The F9x X5 M and X6 M use the N2 series coil and are covered here. The F9x M5 and M8 use the earlier N series coil and need a different part. The quickest check is to compare the part number on one of your factory coils to BMW 12138692611, or send AutoTecknic your VIN and we will confirm it before you order.

Each listing is one coil. A V8 uses eight, so order eight for a complete set. Dinan lists this coil as not legal for sale or use in the State of California. CARB testing for 50-state compliance is pending, and no CARB Executive Order number has been issued. Dinan part number D650-0011. Sold by AutoTecknic, an authorized Dinan dealer.

Installation Notes

This is a straightforward swap with basic hand tools. Work on a cold engine, change one coil at a time so the connectors never get mixed up, and replace all eight at once for even spark across both banks.

  1. Let the engine cool completely and remove the engine covers to reach the coils.
  2. Unplug the connector on the first factory coil and remove the coil from the spark plug well.
  3. Install the Dinan coil in the same well and secure it with the supplied hardware.
  4. Reconnect the factory connector until it clicks.
  5. Repeat for the remaining cylinders, refit the covers, then start the engine and confirm a smooth idle with no warning lights.
