The Dinan N Series Style Ignition Coil in black is a direct plug-and-play replacement for the factory N series style coil on BMW engines, from the N54 and N55 to the S55 and S63. Dinan rates it at up to 10% more energy output than stock, for a stronger and more consistent spark on every firing event.
A Real Performance Ignition Coil, Not a Colored Cover
The black housing with the Dinan logo is what you notice when the engine cover comes off, but the upgrade is inside. Up to 10% more energy output than the factory coil is a Dinan-published figure, not a styling claim. N Series Ignition Coil Legal Status
Before you order, know this: this coil is not legal for sale or use in the State of California. CARB testing for 50-state compliance is pending. Coils are sold individually, so order one per cylinder. Dinan part number D650-0002. Sold by AutoTecknic, an authorized Dinan dealer.

Vehicle Fitment
Dinan lists this coil for the following engines that use the N series style coil:
- M54 (vehicles produced after 09/2002 only)
- S54
- N14 and N18
- N20 and N26
- N52
- N54 and N55
- N62 and N63
- N73 and N74
- S55 and S63
M54 cars produced up to 09/2002 use the M series style coil and are not covered. Check your existing coils visually before ordering. On some N63 and S63 applications (around MY2016 and later), black coils purchased before 1/1/2024 may need a small molding rib below the connector removed. Coils purchased after that date need no modification.
Installation Notes
Coil swaps are a basic DIY job. On an inline six you are usually done in well under an hour. Mounting hardware is not included and is not normally needed, since the coil reuses the factory mounting. Work on a cold engine.
- Let the engine cool and remove the engine cover or coil cover.
- Release the connector lock and unplug each factory coil.
- Pull each factory coil straight up out of the plug well.
- Press each Dinan coil down onto the spark plug until it seats.
- Reconnect each connector until it clicks, then refit the cover.
