Your B58 or B46 car is fast on the street. Take it to a track day, or just string a few hard pulls together on a back road, and the factory heat exchanger runs out of answers. Its thin core saturates quickly, intake temperatures spike, and the car starts pulling timing to protect itself.

The Dinan High Performance Heat Exchanger for the BMW F30 330i and 340i, F32 430i and 440i, and F22 230i and M240i is built for exactly that moment. Dinan's core is 48mm thick against 27mm for the factory part, with 78% more heat transfer surface area. In Dinan's testing it cut intake air temperatures by an average of 8°, with a maximum drop of 15° compared to stock.

How the Dinan Heat Exchanger Holds Back Heat Soak

Thickness alone was not enough, so Dinan designed unique L-shaped end tanks to fit the deeper core. Those tanks add thermal mass, which is the cooler's ability to absorb, store and release heat. The more heat it can hold, the longer it takes to saturate, and the longer your engine keeps making full power. The unit is 100% TIG welded and pressure tested before it ships.

This is the right first cooling upgrade for a tuned car, too. More boost means more heat, and the stock unit is already the weak link at factory power.

Dinan Heat Exchanger Fitment and Legal Status

It is a direct replacement for the factory unit, and it covers both rear-wheel drive and xDrive cars. The kit includes the xDrive-specific transmission oil cooler brackets, so all-wheel drive owners are not left hunting for parts. Before you order, know this: it is not legal for sale or use in the State of California. It is sold under the EPA Tampering Policy for other states, and CARB testing is pending. Dinan part number D780-0002. Sold by AutoTecknic, an authorized Dinan dealer.

Installation Notes

Dinan rates this at about 4 hours of labor. The heat exchanger sits behind the front bumper, so the bumper comes off and the cooling circuit has to be drained, refilled and bled. xDrive cars also need the supplied transmission oil cooler brackets fitted. A shop that knows F-chassis BMWs is the easy route.

  1. Raise and support the car safely and let the engine cool fully.
  2. Remove the front bumper cover and drain the coolant from the heat exchanger circuit.
  3. Disconnect the hoses and remove the factory heat exchanger.
  4. Install the Dinan heat exchanger, fitting the xDrive transmission oil cooler brackets if your car has xDrive.
  5. Reconnect the hoses, then refill and bleed the cooling system as described in the Dinan instructions and check for leaks.
