The Dinan Gloss Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake for the BMW G30 M550i and G14, G15 and G16 M850i keeps the factory lower airboxes and replaces the lids with enlarged 2x2 gloss carbon fiber units. By removing the unused U-channels in the factory lids, Dinan increased airbox volume by 54%. On a stock car it recorded top end gains of +17 WHP and +18 lb-ft of torque.
How the Dinan Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake Makes More Power
More volume is only half of it. The larger airboxes hold bespoke high-flow cone filters with 22% more surface area than the factory panel filters, for a 34% increase in total filter area (102.1 in² vs 76.3 in²). From there, an organically shaped intake pipe carries the air to the turbos without the tight bends of the stock routing. The system is sealed, so the engine only draws colder outside air, not heat from the V8 bay. The result is better throttle response and power that Dinan measured on the dyno, not a sound-only upgrade.
This is 100% genuine carbon fiber in a 2x2 gloss weave, not a wrap or hydro-dipped plastic. It replaces the stock plastic lids and gives the bay the same finish you would expect inside an 8 Series.
Dinan Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake Fitment and Legal Status
Fitment is specific. It fits the LCI (facelift) M550i and every G1x M850i. The pre-LCI M550i has a different engine bay layout and will not accept it. No tune is required; Dinan's gains were measured on the stock tune. Before you order, know this: it is not legal for sale or use in the State of California. It is sold under the EPA Tampering Policy for other states, CARB testing is pending, and no CARB Executive Order number has been issued. Dinan part number D760-0071. Installation Notes
Because the factory lower airboxes stay in the car, Dinan rates this at about 1 hour of labor. A DIYer with basic hand tools can do it on a cool engine. Follow the Dinan instructions included with the kit.
- Let the engine cool and remove the engine covers as directed in the instructions.
- Remove the factory airbox lids, panel filters and intake pipes.
- Fit the cone filters and install the Dinan carbon fiber lids on the factory lower airboxes.
- Install the Dinan intake pipes and secure every coupler and clamp with the supplied hardware.
- Reinstall the covers, start the engine and confirm all connections are tight with no warning lights.
