The E70 X5M brought M power to the SUV world, and it still feels special every time the twin-turbo V8 spools up. You do not need it slammed. You just want it to sit like an M car instead of a lifted grocery getter.

These E70 X5M lowering springs from H&R are built for cars with factory rear self-leveling. The kit drops the front approximately 1.2 inches with new H&R front springs, and lowers the rear using the included rear ride-height sensor links, which work with the factory self-leveling air springs instead of replacing them. It is the subtle option, a clean drop that keeps the factory character.

E70 X5M Lowering Springs for Self-Leveling Cars

Because the rear stays on the factory air springs, the self-leveling system keeps doing its job under load. The ride height sensor links simply tell it to hold a lower rear height. Up front, H&R designs its Sport Springs to work with the factory dampers, so there is no need to replace your shocks. Every H&R spring is made in Germany from shot-peened 54SiCr6 spring steel and tested in an ISO 9001 certified facility, so it holds its height. Sold by AutoTecknic, an authorized H&R dealer.

H&R part number 50435-4. This is the With Self-Leveling kit with the 1.2 in. front drop.

Which Kit Do I Need?

H&R makes four E70 X5M sport spring kits, and the right one depends on your rear suspension and how low you want to go. Cars with factory rear self-leveling suspension use rear air springs and need a With Self-Leveling kit: 50435-2 (2.0 in. front drop) or 50435-4 (1.2 in. front drop). Cars with conventional rear coil springs need a Without Self-Leveling kit: 50435 (2.0 in. front, 1.2 in. rear) or 50435-3 (1.2 in. front and rear). To check, look behind a rear wheel for an air spring instead of a coil spring, or look for rear self-leveling suspension on your build sheet or a VIN decoder. After that, 2.0 in. versus 1.2 in. is simply your drop choice. Still unsure? Send us your VIN and we will confirm it before you order.

Installation Notes

Professional installation is strongly recommended. The front springs are stored energy and require a proper spring compressor to swap safely. A four-wheel alignment is required after installation, because lowering changes camber and toe. The rear air springs stay in place; only the ride-height sensor links are swapped.

  1. Raise and securely support the vehicle, then remove the wheels.
  2. Remove the front strut assemblies and use a spring compressor to swap the factory front springs for the H&R springs, reusing the factory mounts and hardware.
  3. Replace the factory rear ride-height sensor links with the H&R links, following H&R's instructions.
  4. Torque suspension fasteners to factory spec with the vehicle at ride height, then let the self-leveling system settle the rear.
  5. Drive a few hundred miles to let the springs settle, then get a full four-wheel alignment.
