SaleThere is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 under the hood of your X5 M or X6 M. From outside the car, the factory exhaust makes it sound a lot more polite than that. The valves open, you get a hint of what is going on, and then the muffler swallows the rest. You paid for eight cylinders. You should get to hear all of them.
The Dinan Valved Axle-Back Exhaust for the BMW F95 X5 M and F96 X6 M replaces the factory rear section with 83mm T304 stainless tubing, twin 76mm secondary valves and four 4.5 in. black ceramic tips. Dinan measured +6 HP and +5 lb-ft at 6600 RPM, and in Dinan's words it lets "the full chorus of all 8 cylinders" come through.
How the Dinan X5 M Axle-Back Exhaust Balances Sound and Comfort
This is a daily-driven SUV, and Dinan built the system that way. The muffler reduces low-RPM drone, so a long highway run does not wear you out. The factory computer-controlled valves are kept and work exactly as before: closed at low speed and light load, fully open under hard acceleration. Your M exhaust button still does what it did from the factory. The difference is what comes out when the valves open.
Tubing grows from the stock 80mm to 83mm, and the twin 76mm secondary valves are 30% less restrictive than the OEM parts. Everything is 100% T304 stainless steel, TIG welded with a brushed finish, and the four double-walled 114mm tips are finished in black ceramic coating.
Valved Axle-Back Exhaust Install and Legal Status
Factory-like fitment with the included hardware and clamps, and a Dinan-quoted labor time of 2.7 hours. No coding needed since the factory valve control is kept. Dinan states this axle-back does not affect vehicle emissions and is legal for sale or use on emissions-controlled vehicles. Installation Notes
A shop or an experienced DIYer with a lift can install this in about 2.7 hours. The rear section is long and heavy on this platform, so have a helper or transmission jack on hand. Follow the Dinan instructions included with the kit.
- Let the exhaust cool completely and raise the vehicle safely on a lift.
- Disconnect the factory exhaust valve actuators and loosen the clamps ahead of the rear section.
- Support the factory rear section, release it from the hangers and remove it.
- Hang the Dinan axle-back on the factory mounting points, connect it with the supplied clamps and transfer the valve actuators as directed.
- Fit and align the four tips, torque all clamps, reconnect the actuators and check for leaks and valve operation in each drive mode.
