Although awkward at first sight, the X3M/X4M intake setup from BMW is a very well-designed system in the given space available. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and does not change direction as abruptly as the usual OEM airbox designs. So instead of a complete redesign, we focused on improving the OEM airbox with a less restrictive flow and improved temperature efficiency. We have developed replacement drop-in filters made from non-woven mesh with a much higher flow rate than the stock paper filters. To help reduce inlet air temperatures and force air into the airbox, we designed large front scoops which sit behind the grills. The carbon scoops channel air into the ducts and effectively derestrict the inlet side of the air box. The final piece is the carbon airbox lid which, although it doesn’t add to the performance, does allow for a more audible induction sound and gives the engine bay a much-needed aesthetic improvement.
Each intake system consists of the following:
- 1 x Carbon Fiber Airbox Lid
- 2 x Carbon Fiber Air Scoops
- 4 x Direct Replacement High Flow Air Filters
- Laser Cut Stainless Steel Brackets
